Israel and Hamas Reach Ceasefire Agreement — Hostage Release Expected Soon

Cairo/Jerusalem, October 5.
After several days of indirect talks in Egypt, Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement, according to multiple international media reports.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who mediated the deal with support from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, confirmed the agreement through his Truth Social account, calling it a “special day.” He and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also exchanged congratulations over the phone.

The ceasefire aims to end the two-year-long war in Gaza, following Trump’s 20-point peace proposal, which includes steps for demilitarizing Gaza, rebuilding infrastructure, and ensuring humanitarian aid under international supervision.

Under the agreement, Hamas is expected to begin releasing hostages from Saturday, with all remaining captives to be freed within 72 hours. Of the 251 hostages taken to Gaza on October 7, 2023, 48 remain, with about 20 believed to be alive.

Once hostages are freed, Israel will release 250 life-term prisoners and 1,700 Palestinian detainees, including women and children detained after October 7. The deal also includes a general amnesty for Hamas members who surrender arms and accept peaceful coexistence.

A temporary technocratic Palestinian committee will administer Gaza under international oversight by a new body called the “Board of Peace,” led by Donald Trump and including global leaders such as former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Humanitarian aid will be sent immediately after the ceasefire, and an international stabilization force (ISF) will be deployed to train Palestinian police and maintain order. Israel, for its part, will not annex or occupy Gaza, and its troops will withdraw gradually under ISF supervision.
