Upendra Yadav Calls for Directly Elected “Head of State” Instead of Prime Minister
At the Madhesh Province Convention of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) in Janakpur, party chair and former Deputy Prime Minister Upendra Yadav proposed rewriting the constitution to introduce a directly elected Head of State instead of a Prime Minister elected by parliament. He argued that a directly elected executive president would prevent MP-buying and ensure political stability.
Yadav criticized the current mixed electoral system as “chaotic” and suggested adopting a fully proportional system like in 71 countries where money-based candidacy is minimized. He accused the Nepali Congress and communist parties of “looting the nation alternately” during their 35–36 years in power.
Citing scandals like the gold scam, Omni case, Bhutanese refugee scam, and Lalita Niwas land grab, he said youth anger is rising and suppression of social media has turned frustration into rebellion. He added that the nation faces political uncertainty, no election environment, and unconstitutional dissolution of government and parliament.
Meanwhile, youth leader Yogendra Rai Yadav has also announced his candidacy for the provincial president, challenging the current leadership.
