76 Killed in ‘Gen-Z Movement’; Government Estimates Medical Costs Will Exceed Rs 1 Billion
Over 2,500 Injured Nationwide, 13 Still Under Treatment — Final Hospital Bills Yet to Arrive

Kathmandu — The anti-establishment demonstrations known as the Gen-Z Movement, held on September 8 and 9 (23 and 24 Bhadra), claimed the lives of 76 people and left 2,571 injured across the country.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, 13 of the injured are still undergoing treatment in hospitals nationwide, including 11 in various hospitals in Kathmandu.

The government has already distributed relief payments of Rs 1.5 million each to the families of 53 deceased victims, totaling Rs 79.5 million in compensation. In addition, each injured person received Rs 20,000 in emergency aid to help cover immediate medical expenses.

So far, the ministry has disbursed Rs 4.8 million to hospitals as reimbursement for treatment expenses. However, officials say the total cost of treatment could exceed Rs 1 billion, as final billing from several hospitals has yet to be received.

“Some of the hospitals that treated the highest number of injured people still have patients under care, so the complete expense report is pending,” said Prakash Budhathoki, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health.

Budhathoki added that some patients who were previously discharged have been readmitted for further treatment, which is delaying the final accounting. The government is also preparing to establish a dedicated clinic to provide long-term care for severely injured individuals.
